Ericeira, the first and only World Surfing Reserve in Europe
is located 45 km northeast from Lisbon and 25 km from Sintra. The coastline in Ericeira stretches approx 8 km and consists of several outstanding surf spots, including iconic breaks such as Ribeira d’Ilhas, Coxos and the powerful Cave. Ericeira is recognized for its high density of surf breaks, wave quality, and unique environment.
Being one of Europe’s main surf villages, Ericeira is a must-stop destiny for those who practice the surf sport. In Ericeira, we find waves for all surf levels, but mainly for those who are experts, since there are very demanding spots with powerful waves. Besides surf, Ericeira also offers excellent conditions to practice bodyboard SUP, kitesurf and windsurf, among many other sports and activities.
The surf spirit is everywhere, which brings a very laid back atmosphere to Ericeira. However, visitors don’t have to be surfers to feel at home in Ericeira, as the friendly people, narrow cobblestone streets, picturesque squares, characteristic small white and blue houses, the harbour with the fishing boats and the amazing local fish and seafood are ingredients to seduce every type of visitor from all over the world and bring that instant holiday feeling.

Ericeira, the first and only World Surfing Reserve of Europe, offers a great variety of waves, situated along approximately 8 km of coastline.
The best about Ericeira’s surf grounds is how stable the swells are throughout the year, allowing you to surf whenever you want to and in varying conditions or difficulty levels.
Ericeira is a good place to start surfing. The beaches south of Ericeira, Foz de Lizandro and São Julião are both beach breaks and perfect for beginners. Sometimes Praia do Sul also works if the conditions are right.
The beach breaks mentioned above are also good surfing spots for intermediates. We also highly recommend the famous reef break Ribeira d’Ilhas, north of Ericeira.
Experienced surfers have numerous spots to explore, 15 surf breaks in just 8 kilometers of coastline! Just to mention a few: Coxos, Pedra Branca, Backdoor, Reef, Cave and Crazy left.
