Beaches – Ericeira

Coxos beach

Coxos beach is a small yet lovely horseshoe-shaped beach, bathed by extremely clear water and sheltered from the north wind.

Don’t be fooled by the beach’s name: the world-famous waves of Coxos (which forms a part of the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve) are not found here, but in the neighbouring bay to the south.

It has a small bar and toilet facilities.

Ribeira d'Ilhas beach

Ribeira d’Ilhas beach, located between Ericeira and Ribamar, is internationally renowned as one of the best surfing spots in Europe

It has been host to the ASP (WQS) surf world championships since 1985. There is a car park available and the Ericeira beach bus stops nearby. Excellent restaurant with terrace on the beach as well as a surf center.

São Sebastião beach

Under the gaze of the church that gives it its name, São Sebastião beach is situated at the northern end of the village of Ericeira.

The beach (which is long but narrow, practically covered by the ocean during high tide) is accessed by a beautiful stairway of Portuguese cobblestones.

Another attraction at this beach are the waves, highly sought after by surfers and bodyboarders.

Praia do Sul beach

The beautiful beach of Praia do Sul (also known as Praia da Baleia Beach) is located just south of Ericeira.

The break can be divided into two different waves. The first is a right point/reef break that is only suitable for experienced surfers. The second is a mixed (sand and reef) break that is also suitable for less experienced surfers with smaller swells. On the cliff top exist two support parking lots. This beach is sheltered from winds coming from all directions, except west, so it’s an ideal spot for children to play and swim.

Foz do Lizandro beach

When traveling to Ericeira with children, Foz do Lizandro beach is the perfect beach to go!

There is a river that runs from the sea which allows younger children to play safely in slightly warmer water and let the kids safely try body boarding on the little waves. For those wanting to catch some good waves the ocean is right there, it’s a great spot for surfers whether beginner or more skilled.

Lots of free parking, several surf schools and a few cafes/restaurants with healthy food along the elevated walkway parallel to the river/sea front.

Other facilities include changing rooms, toilets and showers and a first aid station. Beach umbrellas and sunbeds are available to hire on the sand.

São Julião beach

Praia de São Julião in the south is one of the more picturesque beaches on the Ericeira stretch of coastline.

If you catch it at low tide, it can be several kilometers long and an unbroken stretch of white sand beneath dramatic cliffs.

Popular with surfers and sunbathers alike, this beach is a great place to spend the day sunbathing and to hit some waves.
